Here is an image which is becoming familiar in the landscape of cities like Madrid. After the 1936-1939 Civil War the Spanish population entered a dynamic of strong urbanisation which during the first decades had to face the hardships of reconstruction. Substantial numbers of high-rise housing units were built with limited technologies and with no elevators. The people that came to live there are still in these homes, but due to their age they can no longer go up and down the stairs that easily. Municipalities are starting to authorise, when the building configuration leaves no other choice and the dimensions of the street are enough, to install new lifts that partially occupy the street public domain. How will the streets in which these irregularities appear evolve? Difficult to say, but meanwhile the quality of life of the residents will improve, and they will be even better if the new policies on rehabilitation are effective.
