I’m also happy reading your blog, Dan. If you want to go a bit further down the way with CAD, try GIS; surely it is a bit different, it is much more geographical (and requieres some change of mind), but it opens different ways to work with things. You can try Qgis (sophisticated) or Kosmo (a Spanish software, I feel as a woodworker you could find its ways to handle geometry interesting). Both are open source and free.
